At the core of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is the relational database, which is made up of the actual database files that store the data, and the database management system (DBMS) that both manages the structure of the database, including the relationship between various portions, and maintains the integrity of the data, including handling system failures by restoring the data to a point in time when it was consistent.
In addition to the DBMS components, at the core of the database are communications components that ensure the database can communicate with clients, manage encryption, and accept or provide streaming data as required. There are also additional server components that help integrate the database into the overall Microsoft .NET architecture.
