Hunan is situated in the southern part of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, south of Dongting Lake. Topographically, it is a U-shaped basin of rolling plains, with mountains rising in the east, south and west and flat lands extending northward. The total area is 212,000 square kilometres and it has a population of 65.95 million. The provincial capital is Changsha. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.18.1.
