Mixing Console

Although each VS workstation has unique features and functions, the layout of the mixing console is fairly consistent across all VS workstations.

Channel Strips

Each VS workstation has a series of channel strips. The channel strips of a VS-890 are shown in Figure 2.4. Each channel strip consists of a fader, a status indicator light, a channel select button, a Pan knob, and a Sensitivity knob. To the right of the channel strips, you will find the Master fader.

Transport Controls

Each VS workstation contains Transport Control buttons ”Play, Stop, Record, and Zero-Return ”located at the bottom right of the front panel. Most of the VS workstations also have dedicated buttons for fast forward and rewind, but some implement the Fast Forward and Rewind controls via the Time/Value dial. Each of the dedicated Transport Control buttons can be used with the SHIFT key to provide additional functions such as shut down, store, restart, and enable Automix record.

Display Screen

The display screen is found at the upper right of each VS workstation. This screen is your window to the inner controls of the VS workstation. Every function you perform on the VS will be shown on the display screen. Some VS workstations allow you to connect an external VGA monitor to view an enhanced version of the display screen.

Time/Value Dial

This dial serves multiple purposes on the VS workstations. It can be used to move position within a song and can also be used to change the values and settings when performing certain functions.

Dedicated Function Buttons

Each VS workstation includes a number of buttons that perform specific functions. These buttons are arranged into groups based on their function. These functions include setting and recalling location points within a song, setting and recalling mixer snapshots, setting punch-in and punch-out locations, and more.
