One of the most impressive and powerful features of templates is the link that a template-based template shares with the template stored in the Assets panel. Anytime that you make a change to the template page and save it, all templates that are created based on that template are automatically updated. You can even manually update pages by choosing Modify, Templates, Update. This can save a tremendous amount of time. To update pages based on templates, follow these steps: -
Open the template by double-clicking it in the Assets panel. -
Make any changes in the template that you want to update. When you're done, choose File, Save. This automatically updates all template-based documents. -
You can perform an update manually and receive feedback about the documents that have been updated by choosing Modify, Template, Update Pages. This opens the Update Pages dialog box shown in Figure 8.13. -
Choose Site from the drop-down menu labeled Look In. In the next drop-down menu, choose the site in which you want to update the documents. Make sure the Show Log option is checked. When you click the Start button, the bottom portion of the dialog box offers information about the documents that have been updated. Detach from Template Command You may run into a situation where you created a new document and applied a template to it. In this document, you don't want it to be updated when the template is changed. This is possible if you break the link between the template-based page and the template. You can accomplish this by using the Detach from Template command. Choose Modify, Template, Detach from Template to remove the template from the page. This effectively breaks the link between the current document and the template. |
