Chapter 33. The Network Filesystem (NFS)

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • Introduction to NFS

  • Configuring an NFS Server

  • Configuring an NFS Client

  • Auto-Mount Daemon (amd)

NFS, the Network Filesystem, is the UNIX way of performing file sharing. Windows and the Mac OS both have their own file-sharing mechanisms, enabling networked computers to access files on remote machines on a LAN as if they were local. NFS provides the same benefits to UNIX machines, with a few extra features that other sharing protocols don't have, although not without its limitations as well.

This chapter will describe how to configure your FreeBSD machine to operate as an NFS client and/or server, sharing files with other UNIX machines on your LAN or across the Internet.
