Activity 10.1: Troubleshooting Access Permissions

You’re an administrator for Lucerne Publishing. The company has recently implemented a Web site for anonymous users. The site contains only static content. You tested the Web site in a lab environment and everything seemed to work fine. However, anonymous users aren’t able to access your site.

You review the access process to try to find the problem. You first check the Web site’s properties in IIS and determine that the site is configured for Anonymous access and that all IP addresses, networks, and domains have been granted access. You then check IIS permissions and determine that the site is configured with the following properties:

  • Log Visits
  • Index The Resource

You next check the properties for the physical directory where the Web files are stored. Table 10.8 lists the properties for each group and user for that directory.

  1. Why can’t users access the Web site?
  2. Assume that the IIS Read permission has been enabled but that nonanonymous users would be accessing the account rather than anonymous users. How would you need to modify the permissions?
  3. What steps in the access process occur when a user attempts to access a resource?
