Using the Aperture Layouts

Aperture ships with a number of preset workspace layouts, including the Basic workspace that appeared when you opened Aperture earlier. Each of these workspace layouts emphasizes different panels, and each can be customized to suit your work style and personal taste. Let's explore them further now.

1.

Choose Window > Layouts > Basic, or press Command-Option-S, to display the Basic layout.

The Basic layout shows the Projects panel as well as the Browser in a grid or list view and the Viewer above the Browser. This layout is good when you want to evaluate images, perform basic image rating, and create and work with stacks.

2.

Press Command-Option-B to bring up the Maximize Browser layout.

The Maximize Browser layout provides a large view of the Browser and closes all panels except the Projects panel, making it easy to select and work with multiple projects. You can quickly open different projects in the Projects panel and make changes as needed.

3.

Choose Window > Layouts > Maximize Viewer, or press Command-Option-V, to bring up the Maximize Viewer layout.

The Maximize Viewer workspace shows the Browser on the bottom and a large Viewer on the top, with the Projects panel and the control bar hidden to maximize space. In this layout, you can easily select images in the Browser and see a large view of selected images in the Viewer.

You can use buttons on the default toolbar to activate the layouts. Let's add the three layouts to the toolbar.

4.

Control-click the toolbar and choose Customize Toolbar from the contextual menu that appears.

An untitled window appears, displaying items that you can add to the toolbar. Simply drag any of the elements to the toolbar to customize it.

5.

Drag the Basic, Maximize Browser, and Maximize Viewer buttons to the left of the Show Adjustments button on the toolbar.

6.

Drag the Separator between the Maximize Viewer button and the Show Adjustments button.

7.

Click Done to close the Customize Toolbar window.

The toolbar can be customized with buttons that you want to use in your own workflow. It can be hidden by choosing View > Hide Toolbar or by pressing Shift-T on the keyboard.
