GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

TomTom Go 700

There are lots of different in-car GPS navigation systems available, but I find the TomTom Go 700 to be my favorite. It's a little smoother and sleeker than the competition, and offers a few more features which is why it earns my Leo's Pick designation.

Let's look at the features first. The unit is pretty much all screen, and that screen is an extra-sharp 3.5'' touch screen LCD with 320 x 240 pixel resolution. The internal 2.5GB hard drive is large enough to store (and is preloaded with) maps for the entire United States and Canada, as well as millions of points of interest. You can get your directions onscreen or via voice command, in your choice of 30 different languages (and 50 different voices!). Operation is via the touch screen display there are no buttons or knobs to deal with. There's also no external antenna, as the TomTom Go includes a built-in GPS antenna.

The TomTom Go 700 includes a 12-channel GPS receiver, as well as an Assisted Satellite Navigation (ASN) system. ASN ensures that you get continuous navigation, even when you're driving through tunnels or parking garages.

In addition, this is a fully portable unit which means it's easy to take from car to car. This is especially nice if you travel and use a lot of local rent-a-car services; just carry your TomTom with you and use it in whatever car you're driving that day. Mount it to the windshield or dashboard with the supplied suction cradle, turn it on, and you're ready to go.

And here's the really neat part. The TomTom Go 700 features Bluetooth connectivity and functions as a wireless car phone kit. That's right, if you have a Bluetooth phone you can use the TomTom Go to dial all your calls (using the touch screen display) and serve as microphone and speakerphone. That's one less gadget you have to carry around with you!

By the way, TomTom also offers the TomTom PLUS service, which provides real-time traffic, weather, and other information for your TomTom Go device. Services are priced individually.
