25.1 Tasks that Can be Performed in a Rolling Upgrade

There are three basic tasks that can be accomplished by performing a rolling upgrade:

  1. Upgrade the base operating system and the cluster software from one version to the next.

  2. Patch the current version of the operating system and cluster software.

  3. Install a New Hardware Delivery kit (NHD).[1] For more information on the New Hardware Delivery kit, please see Compaq's Tru64 UNIX New Hardware Delivery Release Notes and Installation Instructions.

While you can only perform one rolling upgrade at a time, you can accomplish multiple tasks as you perform the upgrade. What do we mean by this? Well, let's say that you want to upgrade from TruCluster Server version 5.1 to TruCluster Server version 5.1A and to install Patch Kit 1 for Tru64 UNIX version 5.1A/TruCluster Server version 5.1A. This can easily be accomplished first by performing a rolling version upgrade followed by a rolling patch at the Install Stage[2] of the rolling upgrade.

[1]The cluster must be running at least TruCluster Server version 5.1A to use this feature.

[2]See section 25.3, Stages of a Rolling Upgrade, for more information on the Install Stage.
